Dear BES Families,

We
’d like to take a moment to welcome you to Brooklyn Elementary School. We are extremely excited about working with you to ensure that your child’s time at Brooklyn Elementary is positive and productive. Brooklyn Elementary School’s mission is to develop motivated and confident lifelong learners who are prepared for future challenges.

BES is committed to providing children and their families a comprehensive, positive, and individualized educational experience. We believe in creating an atmosphere that fosters Cooperation, Achievement, Responsibility, and Empathy. We honor the diversity of our families and encourage all to be active participants in our school community.

Our outstanding staff love teaching and strive for student success. Staff will monitor your child’s performance regularly and will communicate with you frequently through report cards, conferences, progress reports, notices, classroom newsletters, teacher websites, etc.... In addition, I encourage you to contact your child’s teacher regularly to monitor progress as research affirms that students achieve more when there is a strong home-school connection.

There are a variety of ways you can be involved in what’s happening at BES. Here are some events to mark on your calendar as we begin the school year.

  •   First PTO meeting PTO meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 7:00 to 8:00 PM in the PTO meeting room (C-11: fourth grade wing). Please consider joining the Parent-Teacher Organization or PTO. The PTO is a great place to meet other parents, know what is happening at the school, and serve the school community.

  •   School Pictures September 14th & 15th. Payment and package selection forms must be turned in on picture day.

  •   Open House/BBQ Thursday, September 7th, PTO Barbecue from 5:30-6:30 PM. BES Open House from 6:30-7:30 PM.

  •   Columbus Day- No School, Monday, October 9th.

  •   Professional Development Day- No School Tuesday, October 10th for staff development.

A great deal of information will be provided to you in our first day packet and in our Parent and Student Handbook. Throughout the year, BES information will be posted on our school web page and sent out via School Messenger. Please be sure we have accurate email information and your School Messenger account is up-to-date, so that you don’t miss out on any important news and events. In addition, please take time to regularly check the website for information on school events, updates, support information, tips for early learners, family literacy activities, district data, and to stay in tune with what’s happening in your child’s classroom.

Brooklyn Elementary School encourages families to participate in school activities as much as possible. Please explore your own interests, whether you excel in drama, music, art, athletics, sewing, crafting, science, etc... We need you! Since the elementary school years are so important in the development of a child, I urge you to share your talents and traditions by being involved any way you can. Please note that all those who wish to help out in a classroom, chaperone a field trip, or assist at PTO or school sponsored events must complete the Volunteer Disclosure and Consent and Volunteer/Chaperone Registration form to be an approved volunteer. Volunteers, including relatives or friends of staff, must complete all necessary paperwork prior to volunteering. We cannot permit anyone to volunteer who has not completed both of the aforementioned forms.

Our goal is to foster the development of young children socially, emotionally, and academically. As a staff, we are committed to providing your child with the skills necessary to achieve in all future endeavors. The staff and students at BES build relationships of respect in which children are celebrated for their unique attributes and educational success.

We look forward to meeting you personally and welcoming you and your child to the 2017-2018 school year. We know that with your help, your child will have an enjoyable and successful year at BES.

Sincerely,

Shelley A. Michaud                       Mark Weaver
